8th November : Ellon Meadows 5 Donside Juvenile 2

November 8, 2009 emfc98 Leave a comment

Today’s game was played over 2 x 30 minute periods.

Ellon started brightly despite their three week layoff.

Both sides were looking to play a passing game, despite the slightly heavy pitch, and were looking to move the ball well and create chances.

From an Ellon corner Kyle had a shot which was blocked, the ball fell to Matt whose shot was deflected over.

Ellon won another corner and Bradley’s delivery was cleared off the line by the Donside defence.

Thomas was sent through the defence but his shot was blocked wide by the keeper.

Matt broke through on goal but his shot was gathered well by the Donside keeper.

Ellon won another corner and Bradley delivered the ball into space in the Donside box created by Kyle’s clever decoy run. Some frantic action ensued as the ball ricocheted around the box before Alexander steered the ball into the bottom corner to put Ellon in front.

Thomas gathered the ball from an Ellon throw and fired the ball home to put Ellon two goals in front.

Donside rallied and fired in a shot which came back off the Ellon post and ran along the front of the goal forcing Ben into a terrific clearance.

Further pressure from the visitors led to a mix up in the Ellon defence and allowed Donside to pull a goal back.

Alexander broke through from midfield but his shot was deflected wide of target.

Thomas gathered the ball and showed trickery and determination to beat a couple of men in the box and fire the ball home from a narrow angle to increase the lead.

A great through ball sent Michael running through on the keeper but his shot drifted wide.

Donside fashioned another good break but shot wide of the Ellon goal.

Half Time : Ellon Meadows 3 Donside Juvenile 1

[A minutes silence was held at the end of the first half as this was Remembrance Sunday]

Ellon rang the changes at half time with Ben, Kyle, Logan, and Michael making way for Fraser, Gavin, Reece and Scott.

Ellon pushed forward from the restart and, following a stramash in the Donside box, Alexander fired in a shot from the edge of the area which the keeper saved.

Fraser and Alexander both had good chances which the keeper did well to stop.

A poor kick out from the Donside keeper fell to Thomas who tried his luck but his shot was just wide of the post.

Ellon almost lost out when a through ball evaded Gavin’s grasp and was almost turned into the net by a Donside forward.

There was further drama to come as a penalty was awarded to Donside following a rash tackle in the Ellon box. Luckily for the home side the penalty taker screwed his shot wide of the target.

Chris won the ball well on the right of midfield and played a great ball to Thomas who found Alexander in space and able to guide a high shot over the keeper and into the top corner.

Fraser played a great ball through to Matt who calmly steered the ball past the outrushing keeper and into the net.

Alexander played Fraser through on goal but his shot was off target.

A breakdown in Ellon possession allowed a Donside forward to progress and finish well to reduce the defecit.

Thomas swung in a cross which Fraser met well at the front post but was unlucky to see the shot saved.

Full Time : Ellon Meadows 5 Donside Juvenile 2

A fantastic performance from the entire team today. It was especially good considering the lack of games recently and the fact that we were facing a good team that had not lost a game so far this season.  The boys worked hard in all areas of the pitch, closing down the opposition and winning possession well. When we had the ball the passing and distribution was great to see.  Today’s game was full of heart and determination but also skill and composure when it mattered.  It is heartening to see the boys continuing to raise the bar on the levels of performance we can expect from them.
